Told ya, tried to warn ya, saw it right off...although the WHO has declared the swine flu officially a pandemic, fewer folks have died from it than from it than from regular flu. Yet, the push is for a vaccine.

Baxter International Inc. has completed testing and evaluation of the A/H1N1 influenza virus and is now in full-scale production of a commercial A/H1N1 vaccine using its Vero cell culture technology. Baxter received an A/H1N1 strain from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center] in early May and is diligently working to deliver a pandemic vaccine for use as early as July.

(In February, Baxter released flu virus material from a plant in Austria containing H5N1 avian flu viruses. The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany, according to the Canadian Press. It is unconscionable this corporation is now allowed to produce a vaccine that may soon be mandatory for millions of people..please see my other posts to verify this information)

This swine flu vaccine is potentially hazardous to your health. As promised in other posts, if I found new information, I would pass it on to you. Here is some more information. Use it as you deem necessary:
ATTENTION, Please: The WHO has declared swine flu (N1H1) pandemic. This will probably imply governmental demands for universal mass vaccinations under penalty for not complying. Flu vaccine contains squalene oil as an adjuvant.
Wikipedia :A study linking squalene, as experimental vaccine adjuvant, to individuals with the clinical signs of Gulf War syndrome was published in 2002. A U.S. Federal Judge ruled that there was good cause to believe squalene to be harmful, and he ordered the Pentagon to stop administering it in October 2004.

If they attempt to force these untested and essentially experimental vaccinations on you, cite the Nuremberg Code, which states: “The voluntary consent of the human subject is essential.” No experimental vaccine should be “conducted where there is an a prior reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur, except, perhaps, in those experiments where the experimental physicians also serve as a subjects.

Surviving Global Warming...Crops Failing Due To Cool Temperatures...

"For the second time in little over a year, it looks as though the world may be heading for a serious food crisis, thanks to our old friend "climate change". In many parts of the world recently the weather has not been too brilliant for farmers. After a fearsomely cold winter, June brought heavy snowfall across large parts of western Canada and the northern states of the American Midwest. In Manitoba last week, it was -4ºC. North Dakota had its first June snow for 60 years.

There was midsummer snow not just in Norway and the Cairngorms, but even in Saudi Arabia. At least in the southern hemisphere it is winter, but snowfalls in New Zealand and Australia have been abnormal. There have been frosts in Brazil, elsewhere in South America they have had prolonged droughts, while in China they have had to cope with abnormal rain and freak hailstorms, which in one province killed 20 people.

In China, the world's largest wheat grower, they have been battling against the atrocious weather to bring in the harvest. (In one province they even fired chemical shells into the clouds to turn freezing hailstones into rain.) In north-west China drought has devastated crops with a plague of pests and blight. In countries such as Argentina and Brazil droughts have caused such havoc that a veteran US grain expert said last week: "In 43 years I've never seen anything like the decline we're looking at in South America."

In Europe, the weather has been a factor in well-below average predicted crop yields in eastern Europe and Ukraine. In Britain this year's oilseed rape crop is likely to be 30 per cent below its 2008 level. And although it may be too early to predict a repeat of last year's food shortage, which provoked riots from west Africa to Egypt and Yemen, it seems possible that world food stocks may next year again be under severe strain, threatening to repeat the steep rises which, in 2008, saw prices double what they had been two years before.

There are obviously various reasons for this concern as to whether the world can continue to feed itself, but one of them is undoubtedly the downturn in world temperatures, which has brought more cold and snow since 2007 than we have known for decades.

Three factors are vital to crops: the light and warmth of the sun, adequate rainfall and the carbon dioxide they need for photosynthesis. As we are constantly reminded, we still have plenty of that nasty, polluting CO2, which the politicians are so keen to get rid of. But there is not much they can do about the sunshine or the rainfall.

It is now more than 200 years since the great astronomer William Herschel observed a correlation between wheat prices and sunspots. When the latter were few in number, he noted, the climate turned colder and drier, crop yields fell and wheat prices rose. In the past two years, sunspot activity has dropped to its lowest point for a century. One of our biggest worries is that our politicians are so fixated on the idea that CO2 is causing global warming that most of them haven't noticed that the problem may be that the world is not warming but cooling, with all the implications that has for whether we get enough to eat.

It is appropriate that another contributory factor to the world's food shortage should be the millions of acres of farmland now being switched from food crops to biofuels, to stop the world warming, Last year even the experts of the European Commission admitted that, to meet the EU's biofuel targets, we will eventually need almost all the food-growing land in Europe. But that didn't persuade them to change their policy. They would rather we starved than did that."

If you have the proverbial "stomach" to go see it, perhaps it may entice you once again to take garden hoe in hand, canning jar to task, and 5 gallon bucket to fill...with whole grains and cereals. New film exposes unsavoury side of US food industry

The much-anticipated documentary Food, Inc. opens this week, many may find themselves unable to finish their snacks as the film exposes some unsavoury realities about how food reaches the dinner table.

Major food producers would not agree to be interviewed for the movie and they tried to ban the filmmakers from their stock yards, pig farms and chicken barns.

The documentary claims cows are fattened up on heavily subsidised corn, even though they cannot digest the grain properly and their guts become breeding grounds for deadly E. coli strains as a result.

It also says chickens with oversized breasts are grown to maturity and are ready to be slaughtered twice as quickly as they would be naturally, thanks to chemicals in their feed.

There is also stomach-churning footage of conveyer belts packed with little yellow chicks being pushed around like mechanical parts; a cow, barely alive, being dragged around by a forklift; and herds of squealing pigs being forced onto a factory "kill floor".

Food Inc is being released as America is finally starting to wake up to the public health crisis fuelled by its eating habits and food industry

In the film, the best-selling food writer Michael Pollan says: "The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000. You go into the supermarket and you see pictures of farmers, the picket fence and the 1930s farmhouse. The reality is, it's not a farm, it's a factory. That meat is being processed by huge multinational corporations that have very little to do with ranches and farmers."
The film addresses the country's epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Among young Americans born after 2000, one in three will contract early onset diabetes. For blacks, Hispanics and American Indians a staggering one in every two will contract the disease.

"The industry doesn't want you to know the truth about what you're eating because if you knew, you might not want to eat it. We've never had food companies this big and this powerful in our history."

Food is like air, an essential ingredient of life that most of us consume daily without much thought. “Food, Inc.” may change your attitude.

The new documentary dramatically shows how the U.S. food industry is controlled by a handful of conglomerates that churn out products that can make us -- and their workers -- sick.

“It’s all about producing food that’s cheap and plentiful,” Michael Pollan

Warner: Monsanto, Tyson, Smithfield, Perdue. Why are so few companies producing most of our food?

Pollan: Fast-food franchises have a lot to do with it. They need huge quantities of beef for hamburgers and huge quantities of chicken for chicken nuggets. And they want their food to taste the same everywhere in the country. So they’d rather deal with one producer instead of 50.

Warner: Cows are now being fed corn instead of grazing on grass because it makes them grow bigger and faster. How does that affect the health of the cows and the quality of the meat they produce?

Pollan: Cows aren’t designed to eat corn, so it makes them sick and their guts become a breeding ground for E. coli. Forty percent of the animals on feed lots are carrying it. It gets into the food supply through manure. And when you’re slaughtering 400 cows an hour, the way some of these places do, it’s very easy for the manure to get into the meat.
The government can recall toys and cars, but it doesn’t have the power to recall meat. That’s left up to the companies. Which tells me the government can’t ensure the safety of our food supply.

Revolving Door

Warner: Isn’t part of the problem the revolving door between the industry and government agencies? The movie documents how industry officials end up running the agencies that are supposed to regulate their former businesses.

Pollan: People go back and forth all the time. The food industry is one of the most powerful lobbying forces on Capitol Hill. They usually get what they want

Warner: What can the average person do to change the system?

Pollan: They can do a lot. Never underestimate the power of the consumer. Wal-Mart listened when consumers said they didn’t want milk from cows treated with (artificial growth) hormones. And McDonald’s stopped using genetically modified potatoes after consumers complained. People can vote with their pocketbooks.

June 3, 2009: WHO Close to Declaring Swine Flu Pandemic

I know we have all heard it before, but this was in today's headlines, so I wanted you to have a heads-up:

"The World Health Organisation is close to declaring a global flu pandemic after a surge in cases around the world, including the first Briton to fall critically ill solely because of the virus.

Keiji Fukuda, the official overseeing the WHO's flu strategy, said the virus had now reached 64 countries and was spreading fast outside Mexico and the US, the most heavily affected countries.

Fukuda said the organisation was now "getting closer" to declaring the outbreak had reached phase six, the highest level on their alert scale. Overnight, Chile became the latest country to declare its first swine flu death."

With that, I still would like to reiterate the importance of boosting your immune system naturally and getting healthy to resist this strain of flu. Please read my other posts and infomation on the flu. As I get more information, I will post. But, here are a couple of items to consider. This on Tamiflu and Relenza:
"Tamiflu is worse than worthless. It kills people. Japan has banned it. Even the FDA—after review of nearly 600 cases of neuropsychiatric events reported by patients on Tamiflu and 115 cases of neuropsychiatric events by patients taking Relenza—has warned that Tamiflu’s label be strengthened to note: “In some cases, these behaviors resulted in serious injuries, including death, in adult and pediatric patients.
The FDA staff said Relenza, a drug in the same class as Tamiflu, should have a warning label of “reports of hallucinations, delirium and abnormal behavior” observed in some patients taking the drug."

Even more bizarre is the admission by the US Government’s Food & Drug Administration, an agency responsible for health and safety of its citizens, that the ‘test’ is approved for premature release to test for H1N1 is not even a proven test. More to the point, there is no forensic evidence in any of the deaths reported to date that has been presented that proves scientifically that any single death being attributed to H1N1 Swine Flu virus was indeed caused by such a virus. European epidemiologists believe the deaths reported to date are ‘coincidental’ or what are called opportunistic infections."

As if farmers didn’t already have enough problems, now Kansas custom cutters are saying they may not come into Oklahoma or Texas because of poor wheat conditions.

Drought and freeze have damaged the wheat crops in both states to the point many cutters are making the decision to cut their losses. Officials estimate Oklahoma’s crops will be about half of its normal yield.

BISMARCK, N.D. -- North Dakota ranchers are trying to rebound from a string of disasters: Drought last year shriveled their pastures and hayland followed by heavy winter snow, then spring flooding that turned roads and fields to mud.

Hay supplies already low from last year's dry weather were depleted by cows that needed more energy than usual to survive one of the roughest winters in memory.

12 BASIC PRECAUTIONS to minimise exposure to radiation when using a mobile phone

Limit phone calls to those that are absolutely necessary, and restrict these to 6 minutes maximum, which is the time the body needs to adjust. Use a hands-free kit and hold the phone more than 20/30cm away from your body in order to limit the impact of radiation on yourself.
2 -
Do not carry your phone directly on your body, even on stand-by, and do not use it less than one metre away from another person, in order to reduce the effect of 'passive' radiation. .
3 -
Those under 15 should not use a mobile phone at all because they are still growing. With their lighter body weight the radiation is more damaging, especially to the brain, weakening the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB), and to the reproductive organs/ovaries, etc. .

Any elderly person should be discouraged from using a mobile phone, as well as anyone in a weakened state (the radiation will weaken their organism further), and any pregnant woman. Microwave radiation is readily absorbed by the amniotic fluid in which the embryo and then the foetus develops. .

Use the phone only in conditions of optimum reception: do not use it in a confined space such as an elevator, basement, underground station, caravan, etc. In these situations the strength of the signal both sending and receiving is much greater thus the radiation is much more intense.

Do not use the phone while you are in a moving vehicle, including the train, bus, etc, since its antenna will be constantly scanning for contact using the maximum signal strength, and the radiation from both incoming and outgoing signal will be intensified.

Do not use the phone while in any vehicle, even when stationary. An enclosed metal container produces the "Faraday cage" effect, which maximizes the damaging impact of radiation, reflecting not only on the person phoning but also on other passengers, especially children. Thus it is essential to step out of the vehicle before making a call. .

Do not keep a mobile phone beside the bed at night switched on, because even when on stand-by it is in contact with the nearest phone mast and emits radiation at regular intervals. .

Equip yourself preferably with:
- a mobile phone with the lowest possible SAR rating (= Specific Absorption Rate of microwave radiation by human body tissues). The regulation limit is 1.1W/kg for eye-sockets and cheeks.
- a phone with an external antenna, because even if it is less trendy, the omni-directional antenna broadcasts with maximum efficiency and therefore uses a weaker signal than one with an inbuilt antenna. The fashion factor matters less than the health factor. .

Use of a mobile phone should be avoided by anyone who has any metallic object in or on their head, whether magnetic or not, such as amalgam fillings and dental bridges, metal plates, screws, clips, body ornaments, earrings or metal framed glasses. The same is true for those with walking frames, wheelchairs or metal crutches, so as to avoid increasing radiation by the phenomena of reflection, amplification, resonance, passive re-emission, etc... .

In fact, we could have no growth over that period. Yet, the proposed administration plan is to increase spending 50%. This shows you the desperation and stupidity of what is going on in Washington. Their only plan is to inflate until the system collapses. The robust recovery will only bring our negative GDP down to even as the stimulus package spreads its benefits. That will be some feat with real U6 unemployment at 19.2% to 19.8%. These facts and government projections will sink not only the dollar, but also sink the entire economy. America is looking at deficits of more than $1 trillion a year as far as the eye can see. Doesn’t anyone understand the impact of such borrowing?" What foreigners can be stupid enough to lend to us unless yields are perhaps 15% on treasuries. That means the alternative is massive monetization and wild inflation."

President Obama was quoted on C-Span over the Memorial Day Weekend as saying, in effect, "We are broke"...really? But the way the country and the government are carrying on, it looks as though we have not a care in the world...that is if you are of the working class ilk...

Not to be a "nooge"...nor a constant harbinger of bad news...but you must wake up to what is going on around you. Things are amiss...and what to do? WAKE UP! Turn off that propaganda tool, aka TV set, and get REAL! It may not be the most comfortable thing to do, but it may save your life!
According to CNN, a record one in 10 Americans get government aid to buy food. That’s over 32 million Americans! Don't become a statistic! Get seeds, put up food, buy in bulk....

According to Bloomberg, the real unemployment rate now stands at 15.6 percent, not the oft-quoted 8.5 percent Maybe this is an area you cannot really control...but, start reducing debt now! Get rid of unnecessary bills, make contingency plans.

According to the Washington Post, the latest job report foreshadows deeper job losses ahead. Again, something that may be out of your control...but, get yourself in a position to deal with a loss of employment by...putting up food, getting more self-sufficient, etc.

According to USA Today, record numbers of consumers are behind on their non-mortgage loans. If you can't afford it with cash...don't buy it! AND invest in something that will last and benefit you and your family's survival!

According to the Christian Science Monitor, student debt levels and defaults are surging. Students owe a whopping $500 billion.

According to Reuters, one in eight U.S. homeowners is behind on loan payments or in foreclosure.

According to Associated Press, tent cities are springing up as people are forced out of their homes and onto the streets. As sad of fact as this is, you must also mentally prepare yourself for the consequences of what this may bring...people may become more desparate...make sure your family is safe!

Global Food Crisis Looms! It's Not Too Late To Plant That Garden!

According to a recent National Geographic article, the world food crisis has NOT gone away. Certainly the world's attention has been distracted of late due to the potential flu pandemic. However, it is important to keep in mind, the food crisis is not solved...
"Modern society has relieved us of the burden of growing, harvesting, even preparing our daily bread, in exchange for the burden of simply paying for it. Only when prices rise do we take notice. And the consequences of our inattention are profound.
Last year the skyrocketing cost of food was a wake-up call for the planet. Between 2005 and the summer of 2008, the price of wheat and corn tripled, and the price of rice climbed fivefold, spurring food riots in nearly two dozen countries and pushing 75 million more people into poverty. But unlike previous shocks driven by short-term food shortages, this price spike came in a year when the world's farmers reaped a record grain crop. This time, the high prices were a symptom of a larger problem tugging at the strands of our worldwide food web, one that's not going away anytime soon. Simply put: For most of the past decade, the world has been consuming more food than it has been producing. After years of drawing down stockpiles, in 2007 the world saw global carryover stocks fall to 61 days of global consumption, the second lowest on record.

"Agricultural productivity growth is only one to two percent a year," warned Joachim von Braun, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, D.C., at the height of the crisis. "This is too low to meet population growth and increased demand."

High prices are the ultimate signal that demand is outstripping supply, that there is simply not enough food to go around. Such agflation hits the poorest billion people on the planet the hardest, since they typically spend 50 to 70 percent of their income on food. Even though prices have fallen with the imploding world economy, they are still near record highs, and the underlying problems of low stockpiles, rising population, and flattening yield growth remain. Climate change—with its hotter growing seasons and increasing water scarcity—is projected to reduce future harvests in much of the world, raising the specter of what some scientists are now calling a perpetual food crisis.

So what is a hot, crowded, and hungry world to do?"

The Obama administration is considering an unprecedented fall vaccination campaign that could entail giving Americans three flu shots -- one to combat annual seasonal influenza and two targeted at the new swine flu virus spreading across the globe.

If enacted, the multibillion-dollar effort would represent the first time that top federal health officials have asked Americans to get more than one flu vaccine in a year, raising serious challenges concerning production, distribution and the ability to track potentially severe side effects.

Experts in and out of the administration are evaluating a raft of complicated issues, including who ought to receive an inoculation against the swine flu and whether private vaccine makers can simultaneously manufacture the standard 180 million doses as well as up to 600 million rounds of a new vaccine.

"We are moving forward with making a vaccine," said Robin Robinson, a director with the Department of Health and Human Services who oversees pandemic response programs.

Vaccine and pandemic experts are working with the administration to determine how to produce, test, track and educate the public about two different influenza vaccines in the same flu season.

Memories of the nation's earlier experience with a swine flu vaccine present another challenge. In 1976, hundreds of Americans developed neurological disorders after they were vaccinated for a swine flu strain. The public was asked to receive one of two vaccines developed to combat the strain.

Health officials have asked manufacturers to ramp up production of the seasonal vaccine scheduled for rollout this fall to make way for the possible mass production of a swine flu vaccine.

A decision on whether to produce such a vaccine will have to be made soon, because it typically takes five months to produce a new vaccine and authorities would want it available for the next flu season.

Some medical experts said rolling out two vaccines would present additional challenges in terms of testing and tracking adverse reactions. Health officials and manufacturers will need to know what the negative reactions might be for each vaccine on its own and in combination with the other. Initial tests would be done on animals, and then clinical trials would be conducted with people to determine side effects before either vaccine is rolled out.

Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences, said officials will have to weigh the risks of the time spent on testing.

"All this takes time, money and organization," said Fineberg, who led an investigation into the government's handling of the 1976 swine flu vaccinations.

The greater challenge will be tracking any adverse reactions as millions of Americans get multiple vaccinations in a matter of months this fall and winter.

"There will be adverse effects to any vaccine. That's just science," said Michael Hattwick, who ran the CDC's vaccine-tracking system during the last swine flu scare.

Boy, do I feel better. Problem is...if you recall, or you can Google this, this particular flu that we are talking about was called "a never-before-seen" virus, being a combination of swine, bird and human viruses. How can you effectively make a vaccine to combat something that has been apparently "cooked up"?
In addition, who is going to be making this new vaccine. Apparently, a company by the name of "BAXTER"(please remember this name), has thrown it's hat into the ring! But wait a minute...isn't this the same company that "accidently" mixed live bird flu virus with their vaccines??? Lest we forget, here's the scoop mainstream media wants you to forget:

The company that released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria confirmed Friday that the experimental product contained live H5N1 avian flu viruses.

And an official of the World Health Organization’s European operation said the body is closely monitoring the investigation into the events that took place at Baxter International’s research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria.

“At this juncture we are confident in saying that public health and occupational risk is minimal at present,” medical officer Roberta Andraghetti said from Copenhagen, Denmark.

“But what remains unanswered are the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Baxter facility in Orth-Donau.”

The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

The contamination incident, which is being investigated by the four European countries, came to light when the subcontractor in the Czech Republic inoculated ferrets with the product and they died. Ferrets shouldn’t die from exposure to human H3N2 flu viruses.

Public health authorities concerned about what has been described as a “serious error” on Baxter’s part have assumed the death of the ferrets meant the H5N1 virus in the product was live. But the company, Baxter International Inc., has been parsimonious about the amount of information it has released about the event.

On Friday, the company’s director of global bioscience communications confirmed what scientists have suspected.

“It was live,” Christopher Bona said in an email.

The contaminated product, which Baxter calls “experimental virus material,” was made at the Orth-Donau research facility. Baxter makes its flu vaccine — including a human H5N1 vaccine for which a licence is expected shortly — at a facility in the Czech Republic.

People familiar with biosecurity rules are dismayed by evidence that human H3N2 and avian H5N1 viruses somehow co-mingled in the Orth-Donau facility. That is a dangerous practice that should not be allowed to happen, a number of experts insisted.

Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences.

While H5N1 doesn’t easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people.

That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created.

There is no evidence that Tamiflu, the drug being stockpiled by Britain, the United States and Europe, will work if a flu pandemic takes off in humans, according to a review published today by the Lancet medical journal,” the Guardian reported in January. “While the drugs might reduce patients’ symptoms, the authors say the use of Tamiflu could actually increase the spread of the flu virus. If people take the drug and have fewer symptoms they may end up going to work and spreading the potentially lethal virus.”
Tamiflu was originally manufactured by Gilead Sciences and licensed to Hoffman-La Roche. Donald Rumsfeld, was appointed chairman of Gilead Sciences in 1997. Former Sec. of State George Schultz — is on the board of Gilead Sciences.

Survival Tip! Grow Potatoes In A Barrel

Now is the time to truly consider growing your own vegetables. But, what if you don't have a large plot to grow a garden? You can grow vegetables in an assortment of containers...buckets, recycled plant containers, old barrels, etc. One vegetable that is EASY to grow and delicious (once again, once you eat one of your own potatoes, you'll not want for the potatoes in the store!...TASTE is back!)is the potato. And, you can grow potatoes in a container...anything from a 1/2 barrel to a full 55 gallon barrel. Here are some tips to get you going:

Choose the size of container/s in which to grow your potatoes...it can be plastic, metal or wood.

Drill holes in the bottom of your container to allow for drainage. You may have to put a screen over the holes once they are drilled to prevent soil leakage, etc..depends on how big you drill the holes! The holes should be about 6 inches apart.

Set barrels on blocks, old pallets, or whatever, to ensure that there is good drainage. And make sure your barrels are in a spot that receives a good amount of sunshine.

Place some gravel in the bottom of the barrel...again, to help with drainage.

Put down at least six inches of clean soil, mixed with a good compost, sand and maybe some sawdust.

Now...plant your potatoes. To plant potatoes you must get "seed" potatoes from a garden supply store, nice neighbor (smile) or feed store...or online. Do not use the potatoes you buy from the store...they will not produce well even though the potatoes grow little "buds". Once you get your seed potatoes, cut the potato into halves or fourths, depending on the size of the potato. But, make sure you have at least 2 "eyes" in each piece of the potato. Allow your cut potatoes to rest for the night and let the cut edges dry a bit. Next morning, place the cut-side down in the dirt and the "eyes" looking up, and push the potato seed down so that the seed is just covered. Water gently. In a couple of days, your potatoes will start to sprout. Let your potatoes sprout about 2-4 inches...then cover the plant with more soil/compost/sand mixture and gently water. Continue this procedure until your barrel is full. Once you see your potatoes "blossom" you know you have succeeded. Then, let the plants die back. When you are ready to harvest, kick the barrel over, and gather your potatoes. Then, enjoy!

Hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients are used in a variety of manufacturing, including drugmaking: For example, lithium is used to make ceramics and treat bipolar disorder; nitroglycerin is a heart drug and also used in explosives; copper shows up in everything from pipes to contraceptives.

Federal and industry officials say they don't know the extent to which pharmaceuticals are released by U.S. manufacturers because no one tracks them — as drugs. But a close analysis of 20 years of federal records found that, in fact, the government unintentionally keeps data on a few, allowing a glimpse of the pharmaceuticals coming from factories.

But some researchers say the lack of required testing amounts to a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy about whether drugmakers are contributing to water pollution.

Last year, the AP reported that trace amounts of a wide range of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in American drinking water supplies. Including recent findings in Dallas, Cleveland and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties, pharmaceuticals have been detected in the drinking water of at least 51 million Americans.
Most cities and water providers still do not test. Some scientists say that wherever researchers look, they will find pharma-tainted water.

A severe drought gripping Texas is causing unusually salty conditions along the Gulf Coast, upsetting the region's ecological balance and threatening coastal wildlife including oysters, crabs and whooping cranes, the most endangered crane species.

The drought is one of the driest on record for Texas and is currently the worst in the U.S., which has seen persistent dry weather across several Western states, Florida and even Hawaii, according to academic and government monitors. The scarcity of rain has reduced fresh-water flow from rivers and streams into coastal marshes, estuaries and bays that normally dilute the salt content of water from the Gulf of Mexico

Backyard Home Garden and Backyard Chickens: They Go Together Likes Birds To A Feather!

Are you still planning to put in a garden this year and also raise backyard chickens? Here's an idea you may want to consider...plant your garden and put your chicken coop in the same area...let me explain.
1. Choose a suitable place for your garden and fence twice as much growing space as you will need to grow your various vegetables.
2. Put a gate at each end of your rectangular plot.
3. Build your chicken coop directly in the center of your "compound", and divide that area right down the middle with more fencing. Make sure there is a door on each side of your new chicken coop.
4. The "first" year of your garden, plant vegetables on one half of your plot, while on the other half of your plot, the chickens run free in their yard.
5. At the end of the gardening season, let your chickens have the run of the whole place.
6. The next gardening season, rotate the whole operation: plant your garden on the alternate side, and let the chickens have the run of the area that was your garden last year!
7. Keep this rotation system up each year. Not only will your chickens naturally fertilize the area for your future garden each year, they will do a dandy job of ridding unwanted bugs and insects!

You may prepare by obtaining a disaster kit...or you may invest in a home generator. When I lived in the city, I used my home generator on more than one occasion when the electricity went out...once, during a most life-threatening situation...the last 2 minutes of the Superbowl..saved my life! So how do you wire your generator to your home safely? Here is an article I gleaned from the internet I would like to pass on to you. I hope this is a good reference and will truly help you out.

Wiring a Home Generator for Emergencies

There are three basic ways to wire a generator. The first is a permanent installation with a transfer switch. This is the best. The next is the method I have listed and the last is with extension cords, a poor choice.

First. Construct or have constructed an extension cord, one end with a plug that goes into the 220 V outlet on the generator. The other end needs to have a plug for a 220 V outlet in the house, air conditioner or electric dryer. The wattage and subsequent amperage of the generator should match the outlet in the house, but it is not necessary; however the wire must meet or exceed the rating of the generator. This cord will have a plug on each end and is very dangerous! If you plug it in and start the generator, so don't.

Here are some guidelines for cord construction:

With up to a 4 KW 220V generator a grounded 12 G wire rated @ 20 amps is adequate.

With up to a 6 KW 220V generator a grounded 10 G wire rated at 30 amps is sufficient.

With up to a 10 KW 220V generator use a grounded 8 G wire rated for 50 A.

Of course you can always use a larger wire.

Second. Turn off the main breaker. (I can't overemphasize this) then turn off all other breakers!

Third. Connect the cord between the generator and the house. If possible, ground the generator to the ground.

Fourth. Start the generator and let it warm up a little. The generator should be out side or at least in a garage. NOT IN THE HOUSE!

Fifth. Turn on one breaker to 1 room with lights only. If all is well, turn on another breaker to other rooms with lights only. This is to avoid wiring and load problems. So now the house is mostly lit, turn off any unnecessary lights.

Try this before you need it; there might be problems!

Sixth. Depending on the power of the generator, turn on other breakers to rooms with freezers and refrigerators, one at a time with 10 to 20 seconds between. High wattage devices like electric stoves and air conditioners will usually overload your generator. If this happens, just turn of the device and reset the breakers.

At this point your house will operate nearly normal. Accept for high wattage devices like large air conditioners or electric stoves and ovens.

Seventh. Shutting the system down is in the reverse order.

No matter what, shut down the generator before any wires are disconnected. as it is a shock hazard other wise.

WASHINGTON -- Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.
The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven't sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war
"Over the past several years, we have seen cyberattacks against critical infrastructures abroad, and many of our own infrastructures are as vulnerable as their foreign counterparts, " Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair recently told lawmakers. "A number of nations, including Russia and China, can disrupt elements of the U.S. information infrastructure."
The U.S. electrical grid comprises three separate electric networks, covering the East, the West and Texas. Each includes many thousands of miles of transmission lines, power plants and substations. The flow of power is controlled by local utilities or regional transmission organizations. The growing reliance of utilities on Internet-based communication has increased the vulnerability of control systems to spies and hackers, according to government reports.
The sophistication of the U.S. intrusions -- which extend beyond electric to other key infrastructure systems -- suggests that China and Russia are mainly responsible, according to intelligence officials and cybersecurity specialists. While terrorist groups could develop the ability to penetrate U.S. infrastructure, they don't appear to have yet mounted attacks, these officials say. (YET!!!)(emphasis mine)

H.R. 146...Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009...I don't know about you, but omnibus sounds like a big, fat, polluting vehicle...the very thing environmentalists hate. I looked up the word omnibus, and guess what, it means bus. It also means: of, relating to, or providing for many things at once. I get queezy when the government, or any one for that matter, provides for many things at once. Call me skeptical, but multi-tasking hasn't seemed like a strong point for our government lately. What is this Omnibus Act anyway? Here are a few hints:

WASHINGTON, DC, March 25, 2009 (ENS) - Congress today approved a massive public lands bill that protects two million acres of wilderness in nine states and a thousand miles of rivers, a 50 percent increase in the wild and scenic river system. It establishes new national trails, national parks and a new national monument and provides legal status for the National Landscape Conservation System, which will protect some of the country's most spectacular landscapes.
The package of 164 separate bills bundled together, known as the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009 (H.R.146), has been stalled several times on its way to approval, most recently on March 11, when the measure fell two votes short of the two-thirds majority in the House required at that time.
The bill includes over 1,100 miles of 86 new Wild and Scenic Rivers in eight states, said David Moryc of the conservation group American Rivers. These rivers will remain free-flowing and will never be blocked by a dam.

Expanded Americorps has an authoritarian feel

With almost no public attention, both chambers of Congress in the past week advanced an alarming expansion of the Americorps national service plan, with the number of federally funded community service job increasing from 75,000 to 250,000 at a cost of $5.7 billion. Lurking behind the feel-good rhetoric spouted by the measure’s advocates is a bill that on closer inspection reveals multiple provisions that together create a strong odor of creepy authoritarianism. The House passed the measure overwhelmingly, while only 14 senators had the sense and courage to vote against it on a key procedural motion. Every legislator who either voted for this bill or didn’t vote at all has some serious explaining to do.

Last summer, then-candidate Barack Obama threw civil liberties to the wind when he proposed “a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the regular military. The expanded Americorps is not quite so disturbing, but a number of provisions in the bill raise serious concerns.

To begin with, the legislation threatens the voluntary nature of Americorps by calling for consideration of “a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people.” It anticipates the possibility of requiring “all individuals in the United States” to perform such service – including elementary school students. The bill also summons up unsettling memories of World War II-era paramilitary groups by saying the new program should “combine the best practices of civilian service with the best aspects of military service,” while establishing “campuses” that serve as “operational headquarters,” complete with “superintendents” and “uniforms” for all participants. It allows for the elimination of all age restrictions in order to involve Americans at all stages of life. And it calls for creation of “a permanent cadre” in a “National Community Civilian Corps.”

But that’s not all. The bill also calls for “youth engagement zones” in which “service learning” is “a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.” This updated form of voluntary community service is also to be “integrated into the science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricula” at all levels of schooling. Sounds like a government curriculum for government approved “service learning,” which is nothing less than indoctrination. Now, ask yourself if congressmen who voted for this monstrosity had a clue what they were voting for. If not, they’re guilty of dereliction of duty. If yes, the implications are truly frightening.

On March 18, Rep. George Miller, a Democrat from California, tacked an amendment on H.R. 1388, entitled “Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act,” or GIVE (to government), Obama’s plan to require mandatory service for all able young people. Miller’s amendment will “prohibit organizations from attempting to influence legislation; organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes; and assist, promote, or deter union organizing,” according to GovTrack.us, a site that tracks Congress.

In other words, Obama’s “volunteer corps” act, passed by the House with a 321-105 margin and requiring the government to develop a plan for indentured servitude, would deny millions of people their right to oppose and organize against government legistation under the First Amendment.

GIVE was passed by the House on March 18 by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 321 to 105.

It appears Miller’s amendment is designed to strip members of this emerging “National Civilian Security Force” of their constitutional rights under the First Amendment.

The First Amendment reads as follows: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

According to GovTrack.us, the addition of the Miller amendment to GIVE was agreed to by voice vote.

Don't Americans volunteer and give of themselves without coercion? Why is such government control necessary...or is it. It's really time to start asking questions. But, more importantly, it is time to be aware and informed.

Citigroup to spend about $10 million on new executive offices

NEW YORK: Citigroup confirmed Thursday that it planned to spend about $10 million on new offices for Vikram Pandit, its chief executive, and his lieutenants, saying the project would help it save money over time.

Affidavits filed with the New York Department of Buildings show that Citigroup, which has received $45 billion in government rescue aid, expects to pay at least $3.2 million for basic construction like wall removal, plumbing and fire safety at the bank’s Park Avenue headquarters. That figure does not include expenses like architect fees or furnishings.

‘‘In this environment, it absolutely sends the wrong message,’’ said Charles Elson, director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, referring to the office renovations. ‘‘Timing in life is everything.’’

The American International Group story is seared into the public consciousness by now, how employees of the London-based division responsible for most of the insurance company's problems received $165 million in retention bonuses to stay on at the place they helped wreck.

The story of Merrill Lynch's $3.6 billion bonus bonanza belongs in an entirely different league. Many of the details have already been disclosed, but they are making headlines again this week because a judge upheld the right of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to disclose the names of Merrill executives who shared in the payout just before the crumbling brokerage was sold to Bank of America Corp. late last year.

Start with the money. Besides the mind-bending size of the entire bonus pool, a staggering amount of money was distributed at the top. The four executives who got the most received a total of $121 million, according to Cuomo. The next four got $62 million, and the following six were awarded $66 million. A grand total of 696 Merrill employees received at least $1 million each in bonuses.

But the Merrill story isn't just about the size of the money pot. How and when the bonus payout took place matter, too.

Merrill accelerated its normal bonus schedule so the awards took place just days before Bank of America acquired the company at the end of 2008. A couple of weeks later, executives suddenly discovered Merrill was bleeding to the tune of $13.8 billion during the final quarter of the year.

So a company that was losing money at a pace of more than $6 million each hour over a period of three months decided to reward its executives with $3.6 billion of bonuses at the very time. That would have been a sad but private story if it ended there, but it didn't.

Seems the U.N. thinks they know a better way to raise your child.

Czech newspapers are questioning if the shocking discovery of vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus which were distributed to 18 countries by the American company Baxter were part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic.

“The company that released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria confirmed Friday that the experimental product contained live H5N1 avian flu viruses,” reports the Canadian Press.

According to a compiled translation from Czech newspaper stories, the media over there is asking tough questions about whether the contamination was part of a deliberate attempt to start a pandemic.

“Was this just a criminal negligence or it was an attempt to provoke pandemia using vaccination against flu to spread the disease - as happened with the anti-B hepatitis vaccination with vaccines containing the HIV virus in US? - and then cash for the vaccines against H5N1 which Baxter develops? How could on Earth a virus as H5N1 come to the ordinary flu vaccines? Don’t they follow even basic precautions in the american pharma companies?” states the translation.

As health expert Mike Adams points out, “The shocking answer is that this couldn’t have been an accident. Why? Because Baxter International adheres to something called BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3) - a set of laboratory safety protocols that prevent the cross-contamination of materials.”

So, what's this all about? Who stands to gain? And, ultimately, who stands to lose? Since this company is seemingly only getting slap on the wrist for what could have been a complete disaster, the question that comes to mind is, if "they" don't care for your health, who should?

The U.S. Army is to invest $6 million in riot equipment, a fact that has furthered fears that troops will be used inside the U.S. in order to quell any civil unrest resulting from the ongoing economic crisis.

The U.S. Army Contracting Agency, based at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, has a post on the Federal Business Opportunities website, requesting the equipment and has received several notices of interest from potential vendors.

The request titled “84–RIOT EQUIPMENT” outlines the need for hard polyethylene Shin and Chest Guards, shock absorbing Forearm Protectors, Interior leg brace supports as well as knee and ankle protectors.

The ACA asks that the equipment be able to “safely withstand a substantial blow… from non-ballistic weapons or flying debris”.

The U.S. Army War College in November released a white paper called Known Unknowns: Unconventional ‘Strategic Shocks’ in Defense Strategy Development. The report warned that the military must be prepared for a “violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States,” which could be provoked by “unforeseen economic collapse,” “purposeful domestic resistance,” “pervasive public health emergencies” or “loss of functioning political and legal order.” The “widespread civil violence,” the document said, “would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security.”

A journalist from Seattle goes on to expose the obvious:

Goodman who writes in an editorial for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, states “Talk of trouble on U.S. streets is omnipresent now, with the juxtaposition of Wall Street and Main Street. The financial crisis we face remains obscure to most people; titans of business and government officials assure us that the financial system is “on the brink,” that a massive bailout is necessary, immediately, to prevent a disaster. Conservative and progressive members of Congress, at the insistence of constituents, blocked the initial plan. If the economy does collapse, if people can’t go down to the bank to withdraw their savings, or get cash from an ATM, there may be serious “civil unrest,” and the “sea-smurfs” may be called upon sooner than we imagine to assist with “crowd control.”

Another article found on Infowars.com goes on to clarify:
The use of U.S. troops in law enforcment duties is a complete violation of the Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act, which substantially limit the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement unless under precise and extreme circumstances.

Section 1385 of the Posse Comitatus Act states, “Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

Under the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, signed by President Bush on October 17, 2006, the law was changed to state, “The President may employ the armed forces to restore public order in any State of the United States the President determines hinders the execution of laws or deprives people of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law or opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.”

However, these changes were repealed in their entirety by HR 4986: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008, reverting back to the original state of the Insurrection Act of 1807. Despite this repeal, President Bush attached a signing statement saying that he did not feel bound by the repeal.

So, if there is a potential for civil disorder in this country, what types of steps should you take for your own safety and survival? What are the possible difficulties might you face? Let's take a look.

Riot or civil disorder may lead to:

- Disruption of commute: Do you have provisions in your car?
- Being stranded in car or office while family is at home and/or school: Do you have a plan of where you and family can meet. Does your family have groceries, food, etc. at home; and can they stay there for a period of time?
- Riots potentially spreading to your neighborhood? Do you have an emergency communication back-up?
- Danger or threat to personal safety due to gangs, etc. joining in on the general chaos
- Looting and rampaging--Can you and your family "hole" up for awhile because you have water and food stored?
- Fire with potentially no response by authorities? Can you safely get out of the house in case of fire?
- Police overwhelmed and cannot protect law abiding citizens (hence the excuse for military involvement

This is a scenario, that whether we like it or not, we had at least think about it and prepare, especially if you live in the city.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently released information stating that, no matter where we live in the United States, there is likely to be some toxic substance in our groundwater. Indeed, the agency estimates that one in
five Americans, supplied by one-quarter of the nation’s drinking water systems, consume tap water that violates EPA safety standards under the Clean Water Act.

The most obvious solution to water pollution is a point-of-use water
purification device. The tap is the end of the road for water consumed by our families, so this is the logical, and most efficient, place to focus water treatment.

Different water purification technologies each have strengths and weaknesses, and are particularly effective against specific kinds of
impurities or toxins.

Reverse osmosis and activated carbon filtration are complimentary processes.
Combining them results in the most effective treatment against the broadest range of water impurities and contaminants.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that utilizes normal household water pressure to force water through a selective semi-permeable membrane that separates contaminants from the water. Treated water emerges
from the other side of the membrane, and the accumulated impurities left behind are washed away. Eventually sediments builds up along the membrane and it needs to be replaced.

Reverse osmosis is highly effective in removing several impurities from
water: Total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, asbestos, lead and other heavy metals, radium, and many dissolved organics.

RO is less effective against other substances. The process will remove some pesticides (chlorinated ones and organophosphates, but not others), and most heavier-weight VOCs.

However, RO is not effective at removing lighter-weight VOCs, such as THMs (the chlorine by-product) and TCE (trichloroethylene),and
certain pesticides. These compounds are either too small, too light, or of the wrong chemical structure to be screened out by an RO membrane.

Note: RO systems have two major drawbacks.

First, they waste a large amount of water. They’ll use anywhere from 3 to 9 gallons of water per gallon of purified water produced. This could be a problem in areas where
conservation is a concern, and it may be slightly expensive if you’re paying for municipal water. On the other hand, this wastewater can be recovered or redirected for purposes other than drinking, such as watering the garden, washing the car, etc.
Second, reverse osmosis treats water slowly: It takes about 3 to 4 hours for a residential RO unit to produce one gallon of purified water. Treated water can be removed and stored for later use.

Earthquakes: Are You Prepared? What Are Some Possible Warning Signs?

KSDK -- Numerous people reported an unusual odor in the St. Louis area on Sunday and Monday.

South St. Louis resident Terry Thompson said he smelled it.

"Yes, about 9:00 this morning. When I left to go run an errand, I smelled some sulfur or rotten eggs. And I thought it was a gas smell or a gas leak in the neighborhood," Thompson said.

It was not a natural gas leak, according to Laclede Gas Company officials.

"We have a number of ways we can investigate, in the air, testing the lines, and that's what we've been doing since early yesterday morning to determine that this is not related to natural gas," Corporate communications manager Rob Arrol said. "This is something else."

St. Louis Fire Department officials said the odor was not concentrated to any one area.

"The calls started for us about 6:00 Sunday morning. And within a 12-hour period, we've had about 20 calls that we responded to for an unknown odor," said St. Louis Fire Captain Bob Kreuss. "The calls are widespread. They've been north, south, and the central corridor; it's not isolated to any certain area at all."

While fire officials said they do not know what the odor is, it does not appear to be dangerous. Keuss demonstrated a combustible gas indicator, a hand-held device firefighters use to test for the presence of gases that can explode.

"In this case it tells us that there is no flammable range," said Keuss, "so we have eliminated natural gas, any type of flammable source."

Preparing for Disaster: How to Store Water

In my last post, I touched upon the subject of the power going out and the ramifications of such a problem. In addition to food being a problem, one other thing to consider is the fact you may be with out water for awhile. Now is the time to get a storage plan in place and to start having a store of water in your home. Here are some timely tips:

To store water, containers are needed. Ideally they should be opaque so they can block light and be small enough to carry. Each gallon of water weighs approximately pounds. A five gallon jug translates into approximately 40 pounds. You should plan accordingly.

55 Gallon drums:
Drums holding approximately 55 gallons can be purchased reasonably from an area beverage dealer like Pepsi or Coke. Even though they are primarily white, a coat of dark paint can be applied to the container. Restaurants also are a good place to look for these 55 gallon drums. They may have contained anything from soy sauce to jalapenos. A food grade drum suitable for storing water will be stamped with the "2" symbol on the bottom of the container. can be purchased from companies that specialize in preparedness products.

While a 55 gallon container is too large to be moved easily, it's good insurance against water shortages.

Four and Five Gallon Containers can also be obtained from the local beverage dealer. These 5 gallon containers are dark blue with screw type tops and built-in handles. Soft drink companies recycle these containers for their own use, so phone first for availability.

Soft Drink Bottles
Additionally, save 2-liter soft drink bottles. They are ideal for water storage. Even though they are clear and water purity will deteriorate more quickly, their small size will make changing water easy. But of course, many 2-3 litre bottles are not clear, but colored, making them even more ideal for water storage. These bottles are easy to store because of their size and are excellent to tuck in cars and backpacks.

Other Sources of water containers
Check other area restaurants for possible containers, such as ice-cream outlets, deli's, bakeries, etc. Often they will have containers which will be suitable for storing water.

Removing Smells from Your Containers
If you want to use food storage containers that still have a residual scent like pickles, the best way to clean them is wash thoroughly with soapy water and a little bleach. Let them sit with the lid off for a week, preferably where the direct sunlight can heat them. Wash again, wipe dry and allow to set in the sun upside down to drain any excess water.

Remember to store your water in a dark area and check your water for taste every 6 months. Water stored under these conditions need not be replaced for several years. If your storage container is light permeable, plan to change the contents every 6 months.

It is important to obtain your containers today and get those containers full of water. Do not wait for a disaster to strike...whether it be a severe winter storm where pipes, etc. can freeze, or it be the power going out....prepare today so you'll be ready tomorrow!

Scenario #1 : Power Goes Out. What can you expect? We spoke about the fact that food can begin to spoil and the fact you may be out of water for a while. As witnessed in the midwest this past week, people were asked to conserve their use of water because there was not enough power to pump water from the municipal water source. Therefore, in preparing for a potential power outage, you need to have food and water on hand.

Did you know, it is a fact, that the majority of American homes have less than 3 days of food on hand. What happens if you can't even cook that food because the power has gone out?

One solution is to have MRE's

Potential Ramifications Of A Disaster

OK. Let's just say one of the disasters occurs that we spoke about in my last post (Potential Disasters). What kind of things can you expect to happen? By thinking this through, you can better prepare you and your family to deal with the disaster and prepare accordingly. Lets say there is an electrical outage:
An electrical outage, on average, can last any where form 2 to 48 hrs. Food spoilage is possible; you may lose heat or air conditioning. How can you plan for this emergency? What do you need to have on hand? (mres? freeze-dried food?)

What about a severe winter storm:
Your furnance could be affected (do you have a back-up source of heat?)
Frozen pipes (do you have water stored?)
Transportation disrupted: YOU CAN'T GET TO A STORE FOR FOOD! or, food shelves empty due to trucking disruption. (do you have food storage?)

Let's take civil disorder or unrest:
Disruption of commute
Dangerous crowds
Looting, and general chaos
Fire? Stores closed?
Stranded at school, home, office because it is too dangerous to go out on the streets?

Nuclear or biological threats:
Disruption of commerce
Less personal freedom
Impaired breathing air! (NBC gear?)

Flooding:
Danger in traveling, by foot or vehicle
Possible loss of utilities
Evacuation

If you or your family are planning a trip, or even a simple errand, it is important to be prepared for ANYTHING. A good rule of thumb is to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Below are listed a few tips and keys to remember if you happen to have vehicle trouble, or the weather is such that you are stranded. Heaven forbid this were to occur, but in the event, preparation is essential.

Keep a bag stocked and always present in your trunk or in the cargo compartment just in case of emergency. Purchase a bag expressly for this purpose or simply use a cardboard box, an old travel bag, or a couple of canvas grocery bags.

Kits should include, at minimum:
Winter coat, hat, and gloves;

blanket (or more than one)
First-aid kit
Some non-perishable food such as granola bars, or crackers; or some hard candy
"Strike anywhere" matches in a water-tight container
Candles and an empty coffee can to melt snow; a cup is a good idea as well
Flashlight with extra batteries
Small tool kit or at least an all purpose tool
Shovel
Jumper cables
Tire chains

Important Tips
If you are forced off the road or simply have to wait out the worst of the storm, turn on your emergency flashers.

Remember to carry your cell phone with you but realize you may not have service. Call for help if you can.

Stay with your car. In your car you will be protected from the elements, you’ll stay near the highway, and you will be far more visible. Trying to go for help will only expose you to the elements and increase your chances of getting lost. You could easily be hit by another car if you attempt to walk alongside a highway. Run the engine only for about ten minutes per hour to heat the car and open a window slightly on the side opposite the wind for ventilation.

Be patient. Even in the most remote places, there will be other cars on the road and emergency personnel at work.

You’ll be safe, and if you follow these simple suggestions, you’ll be comfortable while you wait for help.

We are all concerned with the possibility of further disaster emergencies arising in the wake of recent hurricanes, tsunamis, acts of terrorism, and floods, and earthquakes. The winter of 2008/2009 appears to be a severe one...and one that has just started! Though some people feel it is impossible to be prepared for unexpected events, the truth is that taking preparedness actions helps people deal with disasters of all sorts much more effectively when they do occur.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) says "To survive a natural or man-made disaster we must have the tools and plans in place to make it on our own, at least for a period of time, no matter where we are when the disaster strikes. Just like having a working smoke detector in the case of a fire, preparing for the unexpected makes sense."
When preparing for a possible emergency situation, it's best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.
Hurricanes are among the most dramatic, damaging and potentially deadly weather events. The force of hurricane winds alone can cause tremendous devastation, toppling trees and power lines, closing roads; they cause flooding and severe damage to buildings. Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States with devastating effect. The storm surge breached the city's levees at multiple points, leaving 80 percent of the city submerged, tens of thousands of victims clinging to rooftops, and hundreds of thousands scattered to shelters around the country. This past hurricane season left the Gulf Coast in tatters, and many northern states were affected by the power of these storms.
Winter storms can bring heavy snowfall and extreme cold that can immobilize an entire region. Even areas that normally experience mild winters can be hit with a major snowstorm or extreme cold. Winter storms can result in flooding, storm surge, closed highways, blocked roads, downed power lines and hypothermia.
Earthquakes strike suddenly, violently, and without warning at any time of the day or night. If an earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.
Floods are one of the most common hazards in the United States. Flood effects can be local, impacting a neighbourhood or community, or if very large, can affect entire river basins and multiple states.
The most disturbing news that the latest surveys have given us is that fewer than 50% of households located in earthquake zones have disaster supply kits at hand. Even after the graphic videos provided by the news media, half of our population makes no effort to prepare! Remember, you will likely be on your own in the hours and days following an earthquake, flood, and severe storm or any major emergency.
It is imperative that you take action NOW, to protect your family. To prepare your family. To survive! There are several disasters which can and may strike you. Make the proper preparations now. Your life may depend on it.
